The Directorate of Studies organizes the Senior Executive Course (SEC) for policy initiators and executors from different sectors of Nigeria’s national life to interact and exchange ideas on issues of national and international concern. Admission into the Programme is based on nomination by the sponsoring organisations and approval by the President. The Course lasts 10 months from February to November and currently organized into eight major modules as follows:

Module I:       Foundation Lectures
Module II:      Research Methodology
Module III:    Policy and Strategy
Module IV:    Science, Technology and Innovation Studies
Module V:     Economy and Management
Module VI:    International Relations
Module VII:   Defence and Security Studies
Module VIII: Peace and Conflict Studies

In addition, elective courses are offered in Computer Appreciation and French Language.

Course Programme Coordination
The Course programme is coordinated by the Directing Staff under the leadership of the Director of Studies. The Senior Executive Course Participants are encouraged to carry out independent study at NIPSS under the guidance of the Directing Staff as well as the Senior Fellows of the Institute. The very rich experience and expertise of Guest Lecturers, drawn from all sectors of life in the society are tapped to stimulate and broaden the thoughts and views of the Participants on critical national and international issues of policy and strategic relevance to Nigeria. The principle of non-at-tribution is adopted by the Institute during academic sessions, to provide a free atmosphere for discussions. Seminars discussions, group research work and tours feature prominently in the Senior Executive Programme. During each course, tours are undertaken, namely a local tour which involves visits by Study Groups to twelve (12) selected States within Nigeria and foreign tour of selected countries both in and outside Africa.

Resumption and Inauguration
The Senior Executive Course No. 38, 2016 is made up of Sixty Five (68) distinguished Nigerians drawn from all walks of life. The Course commenced on 5th February, 2016 and was inaugurated on 26th February, 2016 by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, ably represented by Alh. Adamu Adamu, the Honorable Minister of Education of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

After the commencement of the Course, Participants embarked on familiarization visits to some key establishments and tourist sites in Plateau State, and paid courtesy calls on some notable personalities including the Chairmen of Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas.

The Participants are drawn from the upper echelons of the Private and Public sectors (both State and Federal) in the following categories:

    • Armed Forces
    • The Police
    • Para-Military 
    • Federal Civil Service
    • States Civil Service
    • Tertiary Institutions
    • Organised Private Sector/Professional Bodies

Organisation of the Senior Executive Course (SEC)
Every year, the Senior Executive course Programme is organized around a central study theme, approved by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The study theme for the SEC 38, 2016 is Strengthening Institutional Mechanisms for Poverty Reduction and Inclusive Development in Nigeria. Lectures around the Modules as well as the theme for the year were delivered by carefully selected Resource Persons, including prominent scholars and experts. There were also series of in-house training workshops, brainstorming sessions, and interactive session, all based on the Modules and the theme.
Award of the mni Participants who fulfill all the requirements of the Senior Executive Course, including submission and oral defence of a Dissertation on approved individual topics, are awarded the certificate “Members of the National Institute” (mni).

Study Groups
Participants are usually organized into Study Groups to facilitate the programme of the Course. Currently there are six (6) Study Groups which are coordinated by Directing Staff.
